
According to Time, AP News, & the Washington Post, in 2024 the US admitted approximately 106,000 refugees, marking the highest number in 3 decades and reflecting a significant expansion of the US Refugee Admissions Program under the Biden administration. Refugees came from: The Democratic Republic of the Congo (19,923), Afghanistan (14,708), Venezuela (12,875) Syria (11,274), Myanmar (7,347), Guatemala (5,017), Somalia (4,801), Nicaragua (3,299), Iraq (2,282), & Sudan (2,000).
According to Axios, New York Post, & The Washington Post, asylum was granted in 2024 to people from: Russia (3,754), China (3,159), Venezuela (2,731), India (2,537), & Nepal (526). As to the number of asylum petitioners, there were 620,074 from Venezuela, 250,260 from Columbia, 218,225 from Cuba, 464,000 from Guatemala, Honduras, & Elsavandor, 173,388 from Mexico, 144,767 from Nicaragua, over 170,000 from Haiti, 147,909 from China, & 125,897 from India.
Events that contributed to global displacement in 2024 (from Reuters & AP News)
(1) Armed conflicts in Sudan's civil war from April 2023 through 2024 displacement approximately 16 million people with over 4 million Sudanese fleeing to neighboring countries.
(2) The crisis in Gaza has displaced 1.9 million Palestinians which is 80% of the population.
(3) Escalating violence in Rakhine State in Myanmar caused significant internal displacement of the Rohingya population.
(4) Conflict in the DRC's North and South Kivu provinces led to hundreds of thousands displaced leading to a record of 1 million Congolese refugees in 2024.
(5) In Venezuela & Haiti have led to mass displacement due to economic instability, violence, & governance challenges.
