Top nationalities received in 2021 were from: the Democratic Republic of Congo (42.9%), Syria (10.9%), Afghanistan (7.6%), Ukraine (7.0%), & Myanmar (6.8%)
According to USAFacts & Statista, 17,692 individuals received asylum in 2021 which was the lowest annual total in that time since 1994. Top nationalities receiving asylum in 2021 were from: China (1,195), El Salvador (1,459), Guatemala (1,318), Honduras (1,159), & India (1,136). These figures included both affirmative and defensive asylum cases together.
As to events that caused mass displacement around the world:

The Taliban took over control of Afghanistan causing 700,000 new internally displaced peoples (IDPs) & thousands fleeing the country for asylum.

In Ethiopia, an armed conflict between the Tigray people and the Liberation Front (TPLF) caused 2 million IDPs and thousands to flee to Sudan.

A military coup in 2021 escalated violence in Myanmar worsening the Rohingya crisis. Hundreds of thousands became IDPs, many Rohingya refugees remained stranded in refugee camps in Bangladesh, & others fled by sea.

Due to gang violence in El Salvador, Honduras, & Guatemala as well as hurricanes and drought, tens of thousands migrated towards the US boarder seeking refuge.

The Syrian Civil war now had 6.9 million IDPs with millions more in refugee camps abroad.

Climate Disasters that caused displacement were (a) floods in S. Sudan, India & China, (b) wildfires in Greece, Turkey, & the US, & (c) an earthquake in Haiti.
