According to the Center for Immigration Studies, the US admitted 11,814 refugees.  This was the lowest number received since 1980.  Nationalities represented in this number were from: the Democratic Republic of the Congo (2,868), Myanmar (2,115), Ukraine (1,927), Afghanistan (604), Iraq (537), Syria (481), Eritrea (475), El Salvador (365), Moldova (364), & Sudan (354).  

According to Watdapho & Immigration Research, 30,736 individuals were granted asylum through both affirmative (16,864) & defensive (14,565) processes.  As for affirmative process cases top nationalities were from: Venezuela (3,349), China (2,855), Turkey (1,568), Egypt (1,336), Russia (741), Mexico (490), Guatemala (441), Nigeria (411), El Salvador (291), and Syria (286).  As for defensive grants, peoples came from Guatemala, Honduras, & El Salvador.  

In 2020, global displacement reached unprecedented levels driven by the combination of armed conflicts, climate-related disasters, and the COVID-19 pandemic.  According to the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre, there were 55 million people living in internal displacement by the end of that year, with 40.5 million new displacements recorded-the tightest annual figure in the decade.

Events that caused displacement in 2020:

  1. Syria: 6.6 million internally displaced due to the country’s long Civil War. (According to Wikipedia)

  2. Democratic Republic of Congo: Clashing between armed groups led to 480,000 displaced during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. (According to TIME)

  3. Afghanistan: Continued violence led to 3.5 million internally displaced persons (IDPs).  

  4. Yemen: The ongoing civil war displaced 3.6 million people (according to NPR)

  5. Tigray Region, Ethiopia: An outbreak of conflict led to over 1 million IDPs in Ethiopia and more than 50,000 fleeing to Sudan (Wikipedia)

  6. Central African Republic: Election-related unrest led to 300,000 IDPs.
