
According to the Pew Research Center, the Migration Policy Institute, & BBC News, 84,995 refugees were admitted into the United States with the top nationalities being from: the Democratic Republic of Congo (16,370), Syria (12, 587), Myanmar (12,347), Iraq (7,173), & Somalia (5,724).

​According to the Asylum-Seekers Sponsorship Project, 20,311 individuals received asylum in the United States with the top nationalities being from: China (21.9%), El Salvador (10.5%), Guatemala (6.5%), & Honduras (4.4%).

As to events that caused displacement around the world in 2016:
(1) The Syrian Civil War caused over 5 million Syrians to becoming refugees seeking sanctuary globally with 6.3 million internally displaced by the end of the year.
(2) Because of ISIS's offensive in the city of Mosul in Iraq, over 3 million Iraqs were displaced.
(3) 1.5 million Internally Displaced Peoples were pressured by Pakistan & Iran to return to Afghanistan.
(4) In the South Sudan Civil War, over 3 million people were displaces (1.8 million internally & 1.2 million as refugees).
(5) In Somalia, there was drought & conflict causing hundreds of thousands to become Internally Displaced Peoples (IDPs).
(6) In Venezuela, an economic collapse began causing hyperinflation, food shortages, & a political crisis. By the end of 2016, around 700,000 fled to neighboring countries.
(7) 24 million people were displaced related to weather disasters in Haiti, China, India, Bangladesh, Ecuador, & Italy.
