White.Resettlement

Throughout our almost 10 years of serving migrant newcomers since 2014, we have served a small population of those of have fled from global crises and arrived in Chicagoland most notably (but not comprehensively): Iraqis fleeing an unstable Iraq, those who fled from Syrian Civil War, the Russians invasion of Ukraine, now Venezuelans fleeing their currently destabilized nation, & more.

Our resettlement services are in partnership with a variety of other local organizations in the Chicagoland area such as: World Relief Chicago & Catholic Charities.  We have also been helping with newly arrive migrant newcomers from Venezuela in our partnership with New Life Centers.

Our resettlement services involve a variety of efforts such as:

1) Sponsor newcomer families through individuals from our network of constituents.

2) Help sponsored families find housing, find work, & register their children in local schools.

3) Some families have the privilege to stay in our Welcome Home while our legal team helps process their asylum case.

*Designated donations towards refugee resettlement help to subsidize the various costs of these these newcomer families have to start anew.

Resettlement

Are you wondering, ‘How can I make the biggest impact?’

Migrant newcomers come to the United States most of the time because they do not wish to come here.  They've left a home that they will most likely never be able to return for reasons such as: war, political destabilization, heightened crime, devaluation of currency, no jobs, poor education, etc.

The biggest impact you can have is through engaging for the long term. While economic response is critical, we've found that emotional response & "making family with non-family" is the gift they most need.  Listen to their stories, cry with their woes & injustices, lend them your social capital so that they can be a part of our community & find a job, etc.  These are the things that they need to rebuild that we need every volunteer & donor to be a part of in our story to welcome migrant newcomers.  We know it takes many years for newcomers to rebuild their lives, and this has been true with the many people we've served who have fled the world's largest headlines in global crises. They will need our community’s support, both now and in the years to come.

What are the volunteer opportunities?

We are always in need of volunteers to help friendship-builders, host families, drive families to appointments, and more! We believe that everyone has a part to play in building a welcoming community. The best way to begin to volunteer is to visit our volunteer page.

We are working to connect everyone with a way to serve!  As arrivals of Afghans and other refugees increase over the weeks and months ahead, we expect these opportunities to serve will also increase.
