
In 2017, the United States admitted approximately 53, 716 refugees. The top countries of origin in 2017 for refugees coming to the US were: the Democratic Republic of Congo (7,878), Myanmar (3,555), Ukraine (2,635), & Bhutan (2,228).

As to approved asylum applications in the US in 2017, there were 26,382 approvals. 43% of the all asylum applications were from peoples from El Salvador.

As to events in 2017 that caused displacement in the world, UNHCR reported that 68.5 million people around the world were displaced by various conflicts:
(1) The Syrian Civil War: By the end of 2017, 6.3 million were internally displaced, & 5.5 million became refugees seeking refuge in other countries.
(2) South Sudan Civil War: Because of this conflict, around 4 million were displaced both internally & across their borders.
(3) The Rohingya Crisis in Myanmar: 740,000 Rohingya fled to Bangladesh in a just of weeks due to a brutal military crackdown in Rakhine State.
(4) Venezuela's Political & Economic Collapse: Over 1.5 million people left Venezuela by the end of 2017 due to the economic collapse, food shortages, & political repression.
(5) ISIS's Battle for the City of Mosul in Iraq: Because of this specific battle, there were over 3 million internally displaced peoples.
(6) The Conflict in Afghanistan: there were over 1.8 million internally displaced peoples due to the Taliban insurgency, civilian casualties, & deteriorating security.
(7) Natural Disasters: 18 million people were globally displaced due to natural disasters from: Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Bangladesh, India, & Nepal.
